This article has some interesting facts/figures, though I think it misses the mark wrt some important aspects of history and current players. For instance, there is no mention of BBSs/forums, which continue to be active, with people coalescing around subjects of interest rather than general aggregations (and then sub-grouping like FB does). Also reddit is conspicuously absent from the discussion, but the social media cognoscenti love to marginalize it. As for the future, I think overload will become more of a “thing” that people react to, and while AI might “fix” that, there may in fact be a backlash into more point-to-point communication and less broadcast (e.g. FB feeds). Time will tell. But I think the death of the still image is going to happen. Video has its purpose, but in a world of cognitive overload, 1 frame might be more powerful than 24fps.
